St Luke's Greek Orthodox
Cathedral,
Dundonald Road,
1876-1877,
J.Sellars.
St Lukes Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Dundonald Road was formally Belhaven Church, built for a United Presbyterian congregation between 1876 and 1877 by James Sellars.
The building takes some of its stylistic elements from the Normandy Gothic, perhaps derived from J.L.Pearson and R.Norman Shaw's church in Lyons.
The front of the building has a strongly vertical nature with a pair of buttress turrets flanking triple lancet windows.
At the north end of the body of the church is a gallery behind which lie three tall and narrow lancet windows.
The main body of the church is flanked, on both sides, by arcaded aisles.
At the south end of the church is a modern Byzantine iconostasis, behind which, hidden from view here, lies the organ.
The roof is a timber construction with lightwieght framing and elaborate painted decoration and stencilling.
The nave of the church is aligned north and south with a gallery at the north end which used to be decoratively stencilled in a similar manner to the roof. "
