Saint Francis Church,
405-7 Cumberland Street,
1868, 1878-81, 1895,
Designed in 1868 by Gilbert
Blount, and later rebuilt by Pugin and Pugin, the nave was built between 1878
and 1881 while the chancel and chapels were completed in 1895. At this time
the friary was also added.
Externally the building is finished in rock faced stone in a style relating
to the English Gothic period of between 1290 and 1350.
A statue of St Francis is
set at the top of the stair tower to the left of the entrance.
The main entrance is formed by two doors set under a pointer arch, above the
doorway are stone carved coats of arms.
In 1991 the Franciscan Order of Friars decided to leave the building and a review
of possible alternate uses was held.
The National Trust for Scotland took over the friary for conversion into amenity housing while Strathclyde Regional Council commissioned Page and Park to convert the nave of the church into a community centre.
At the north east end of the nave is an elaborate stone pulpit, built in 1887 by Boulton of Cheltenham from alabaster and marble with Caen stone reliefs."
