Queen's Cross Church,
866 Garscube Road,
1897-1899,
Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Queen's Cross Church at 866 Garscube Road was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and built over the period between 1897 and 1899.

The building was designed for St Matthew's free church in Bath Street but since 1977 has been the home of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society.

The view across Garscube Road reveals a Gothic church with modern forms and modern detailing.

Internally the main hall is characterised by a large uninterupted space with a roof formed by a timber barrel vault.

Below the east gallery is a timber screen by Thomas Howarth separating a former school room from the main body of the church.

Most of the original furnishings have survived including this highly decorative pulpit from the chancel which clearly features Mackintosh's stylistic bird and flower motif."
