J.W.Simpson and E.J.Milner Allen
A competition held in 1891 resulted in the controversial selection of English architects J.W.Simpson and E.J.Milner Allen to design this new art gallery and museum.
Part of the capital required was raised by the staging of an international exhibition in Kelvingrove Park.
The Foundation stone was
laid in 1897 and the building opened in 1901.
This is a bronze statue of St Mungo, situated at the north entrance by George
Frampton (1897).
This view of the gallery is from the south west and shows the scale of the corner
pavilions.
The main hall soars over three storeys and spans five bays with arcaded support.
At the north end is the grand organ, while looking in the opposit direction, the Glasgow Corporation's city arms fill the upper part of the south wall.
At right angles to the axis of the main hall are two further side halls, this view of the arcaded gallery at first floor level, the "portrait promenade", is put to use for the display of exhibits."
