House for an Art Lover,
Bellahouston Park
1901,1996
C R Mackintosh, A Macmillan.
The House for an Art Lover was designed in 1901 by Mackintosh for a competition held for the Darmstadt magazine Zeitschrift Fur Innendekoration.
The submission of the drawings was too late to meet the competition deadline but Mackintosh was awarded a special commendation.
In 1988 Glasgow engineer Graham Roxburgh decided to build the house on its proposed site in Bellahouston Park. Because the drawings were incomplete they were interpreted and completed by Professor Andy Macmillan, at that time the head of the Mackintosh School of Architecture.
The music room has French windows leading on to a terrace. Piers Kettlewell, who also made the furniture and fittings for the oval room, made the piano baldacchino and casing which were carved from close grained wood and hand painted.
The dining room is a dark contrast to the bright, airy decor of the music room. The walls are panelled in dark wood relieved only by a frieze of gesso panels. The fireplace wall is papered with a rose motif against a mid blue ground."
