Bute and Randolph Hall,
Glasgow University,
Gilmorehill,
1878-84,
J. Oldrid Scott and Edwin Morgan.

Funded by a donation from Charles Randolph and the third Marquis of Bute, the original design (1865-66) for Bute Hall (and the adjoining Randolph Hall) is by Sir George Gilbert Scott.

Scott died shortly after the design was finalised and the construction was undertaken by J. Oldrid Scott and Edwin Morgan (1878-84).

The external elevation is bracketed by twin circular towers with galleried tops.

The principle staircase connects the main entrance with both halls. The main features consist of the decorative cast iron beam supporting the stairway, the ornate ballustrades and the wooden ribbed and panelled ceiling vault.

Bute Hall is aligned on a north south axis. To the east and west run arcaded galleries supported by clustered iron columns. The columns and spandrels are painted in Crichton Stuart Blue (for the Marquis of Bute) and gold.

Randolph hall forms an ante-room running perpendicular to the axis of the main space and is separated by a wooden panelled screen."
