The Burrell Collection,
Pollok Country Park,
1983,
Barry Gasson
In 1944, Sir William Burrell bequeathed his art collection to Glasgow Corporation. A specification of the bequest was that the collection should be housed at least 16 miles from the city center.
In 1972 Barry Gasson and John Meunier won a competition to design a building to house the collection in Pollok Park. The final design was built by Barry Gasson Architects, and the building opened in 1983.
The building is set in parkland against a stand of trees, the main entrance being incorporated into a 14thC arch taken from Hornby Castle in Yorkshire.
At the far end of the entrance hall is a covered courtyard. Surrounding the courtyard are three rooms taken from Hutton Castle, Sir William Burrell's former home.
The central feature in the courtyard is the Warwick Vase."
