Barony Hall,
1 Castle Street,
1886,
JJ Burnet and JA Campbell
Originally a church, the
Barony Hall at 1 Castle Street was the competition winning design of J.J. Burnet
and JA Campbell in 1886.
This red sandstone building replaced a Gothic church by John Robertson and James
Adam (1793-1800) and now serves as the main ceremonial hall of Strathclyde University.
The church is Early English in style but Scotish in proportion and detail, it
resembles Dunblane Cathedral externally and Gerona Cathedral within.
Internally the Nave soars up to a tall clerestorey with a rustic timber roof above. To the side an arcaded aisle with plain round piers."
