Activity 23: Timelines

Timelines are useful ways of displaying information in chronological order of happenings over a period of time.

For example you could make a timeline of your average day, or of your life or of the history of your family.

Holmwood House Timeline

You will use this one during the next Activity.

To make a timeline, like a graph, you need to choose a scale, a starting point and a finishing point. The following very simple timeline is an example of someone's average day starting at 6 a.m. and finishing at 12 midnight. The scale is one unit per hour.

You can now ask questions about the time intervals on the line e.g.
How long is this person up?

How long does she or he sleep?

If each meal takes half an hour, what is the longest spell through the day without food?
How long is the working day?

Make up a similar timeline showing your average school day: try to make it more complete than the one above.
