Activity 1: Shapes

When you look at a building there are a number of different shapes that are used. The most common shapes are those that have right angles at the corners.

Can you explain why?

There are other shapes that could be used instead of these.

Can you think of any and can you explain why they could also be used?

Why do you think they are not used more often?

In Holmwood House the most common shape you can see on the outside of the building is the rectangle.



What other shapes can you see in the pictures of the exterior of the house?

There are three kinds of shape that can be seen in buildings:

1. congruent shapes
2. similar shapes
3. symmetrical shapes
