The Millennium Dome is a spectacular architectural structure.
It is a vast building with a very striking exterior, visible from
long distances away.
One of Glasgow’s most spectacular recent buildings, completed
in 1997 is the new conference hall at the SECC – many people
call it the “Armadillo” because of its unusual shape.
Its surface is shiny and metallic, reflecting the sun and standing
out boldly in the urban landscape.
What makes the “Armadillo” so spectacular?
Try to imagine it in different circumstances. What if it was covered
in brown metal?
Would it be more or less striking?
What if it was completely made of glass?
What would you do to a building to make it totally spectacular?
Would you paint your house bright yellow?
Or put plants over every inch of the local library?
Another spectacular Glasgow project was the Cranhill Water Tower.
Local residents felt unhappy with the look of the water tower so
they worked with an architect to devise a stunning lighting plan.
At night the tower is lit in many different colours, making bright
pools of light and dramatic shadows. It does not change the purpose
of the tower, but makes it look amazing.
ScottishPower is decorating some of its electricity sub-stations
with colourful light, too.
What other buildings or structures can you identify which would
benefit from a spectacular new look?
