The site chosen for the Homes for the Future project is just to
the east of Glasgow City centre and adjacent to Glasgow Green. By
looking through a series of historical plans, it is possible to
chart the changes of this area over the years – from croft
lands, to the villas of Charlotte Street (one of which remains),
to a densely populated area with halls, schools, factories and tenements
by 1909.
Using plans
It is possible to use historical maps to identify the development
of a city.
Using the Glasgow maps linked to above and also here,
try to:
• identify the industrial uses, residential and recreational
uses of the land
• locate the older buildings in the area
• think which ones still exist, and why
• explain why you think a particular building still exists
• locate the Homes for the Future site
• search for the remains of older land uses and ownership
which affect us today.
