Ian Ritchie Building

Reading plans
Look at the plans linked to above and also here. They are plans of two of the blocks of flats. Try to “read” the plans by identifying the common stairway, the front doors to the flats, the hallway, and how to get to the living room, the kitchen, and the bedroom. Think of the plans as views looking down on the building with the roofs taken off.

What are the similarities between the flats, and what are the differences?
Can you locate these buildings on the site plan and the perspective?

The Ushida Findlay building reflects the architects’ interest in organic shapes and landscape.

In the Ian Ritchie building particular care has been taken to make the building as energy-efficient as possible. Identify some of the energy-efficient features which affect the appearance of the houses.

Pre-fabrication
The Ian Ritchie block of flats has been designed as a prototype for living that should adapt to changing lifestyles and family circumstance. It is a building which is prefabricated (made in sections) away from the site, then assembled on site. This has some advantages over more traditional construction methods because it’s faster to erect and some work can be carried out in factory-controlled conditions away from the Scottish weather!
